Meet Our Team
Jo Murray, BSc (Hons) FCA
I trained as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant with Pricewaterhouse Coopers and James Cowper. After qualifying in 2006, I got a job as an Accountancy Tutor with FTC (Now Kaplan) in Bristol, primarily teaching Accounting, Audit, Financial Reporting & Corporate Law to both professional ACA & ACCA students. Daughter of a Cornish dairy farmer, I grew up making dens in the stacks of straw bales in the barn, and playing with ponies. Although there is something quite weird and wonderful about the corporate world, my heart lies in the country. I would much rather help small, local, rural businesses grow and reach their full potential than make rich people richer in the City.
If you are looking for a highly qualified, amiable and down-to-earth team to give you a hand with your finances then don’t hesitate to get in touch.
I come from a family of Chartered Accountants and, although I have been in sales for the last 25 years, I recently decided that a role in an accountancy environment is where I really want to be. I am currently home studying an ICB bookkeeping course in my spare time and welcomed the opportunity to join Free Range Business when it arose. Having set up and run the UK office for a Belgian company in the past, I am really enjoying being a part of Free Range Business’ expansion.
My partner and I recently moved to a house with some land, which we are hoping to turn into a small holding in the near future, so this fits in nicely with Free Range’s client base. I am looking forward to learning new skills in the financial sector at the same time as using my experience to assist in the growth of the business. Exciting times ahead!
Berry Bernsen MSci (Hons)
I graduated from the University of Southampton with a Masters in Geophysics in 2012, and started my career with a couple of years overseas in the oil industry. Accountancy was always in my blood though, as both my grandfather and great uncle had long careers as chartered accountants, so it was only a matter of time before I followed in their footsteps.
In 2016 I made the leap to accountancy, beginning my training with Ernst & Young in Bristol. After a couple of years I found that I missed the pace of rural life, and more importantly I was having to spend too much time away from my young family. I joined Free Range in December 2018, and immediately noticed how much more closely we work with our clients compared to a large corporate firm.
Growing up in the countryside, I have developed a keen equestrian and rural interest and have owned my own horse since the age of 13. Most of my holiday time has been spent working at my local riding school, livery yard or equine vet so I have a good understanding of how these businesses work. Whilst at school in Gillingham I really enjoyed business studies and continued this on to A level with a view to furthering my studies in the accountancy sector. An apprenticeship appealed to me as I can gain experience working within a business environment and study for my AAT at the same time. With Free Range Business I am fortunate enough to combine both my rural and business interests and I am really looking forward to helping our clients reach their full potential.
I am very excited to have started an apprenticeship role in Business Administration at Free Range. In my previous employment I have been a qualified chef and a domiciliary care worker, so this is a new and welcoming challenge.
I am very interested to learn new information about the financial sector and about how my role as administrator fits in to the business. Having grown up in Shepton Mallet I enjoy the small-town charm and really appreciate the Countryside. In my spare time I like walking the dogs, attending live music events and spending quality time with my two children.
